Harvey Rosser Shanholtz ( August 30, 1922 - November 12, 2016 )


Harvey Rosser Shanholtz, 94, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2016 after a brief stay at Woodland Hospice in Mt Pleasant, Michigan. He was born on August 30, 1922 in Richmond Virginia, the son of Ruby Lewis Shanholtz and Richard Shanholtz. Due to several health issues, which he overcame, he was raised and educated in rural Virginia community by his maternal grandmother Mary Lewis Wood.

Harvey married Joyce Pollack on December 24, 1942 and two days later left for active duty with the Army, serving in WWII. He was wounded in Normandy, France in June of 1944. He spent two years and nine months at Walter Reed Hospital recovering from the wound to his right arm. He was awarded the Purple Heart. After his recovery he served as a liaison for the United States Government problem solving for all branches of the Armed services. He retired in 1972. He and his wife, Joyce, spent time traveling the United States, living in Ohio, Florida and finally settling in Arizona. Joyce predeceased him in 1991.

He married June Tigner Meyer on June 6, 1992. They lived in Sanford and wintered in Florida until their health would no longer permit long distance travel. They shared many good times with family and friends until the time of her death in June of 2013.

Harvey leaves behind daughters Cathy (William) Samdal, Patty (Valentine II) Young, grandchildren, Lara (Gregory) Wagner, Adrienne (Christian) Hatzenbeler, Tressa Samdal, Rob (Marcy) Young, and great grandchildren, Kylah, Lucas, Brennen, Presley, Roman, Kason and Kellen.

Arrangements are being handled by Smith-Miner Funeral Home of Midland, Michigan. In accordance with Harvey’s wishes cremation has taken place. A private ceremony will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
