Keith Cornell Mead, 80, of Midland, died December 23, 2016. Keith was born March 12th, 1936, in Battle Creek, Michigan. The son of the late William E. and Edna Ruth Mead. He married the former Betty Bentley on August 12, 1961 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Keith graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He worked for the K.V.P. paper company in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Keith then moved to Midland, Michigan and worked for the Dow Chemical Company until his retirement. His accomplishments at Dow included a patent for a child resistant overcap for aerosol containers.
Keith was a Rotarian and believed strongly in global responsibility. He taught his family to respect and embrace other cultures by hosting students and visitors from around the world. He helped with the world wide mission to eradicate polio and vaccinate against preventable diseases. A contributing member of his community, Keith served on the Arnold Center’s board of directors. A champion of diversity, he helped develop equipment for the world wide Beep Baseball for the blind.
Keith had a quest for knowledge and could carry on a conversation about almost any subject. His strong belief in education and helping others live to their full potential lead him to work with Junior Achievement and serve on the Mitten Bay Girl Scout Council.
In his recreational time, Keith was an avid sailor enjoying adventures on his boat, Breeze Please. Most recently, he was a volunteer and a patient at the Pulmonary Rehabilitation center in MidMichigan Medical Center, Midland.
Keith is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty; daughters Kimberly Mead of Midland, Brenda and son-in-law Dylan Casey of Middleton, Wisconsin; grandchildren Sarah, Hannah, Simon and Liam; Brother Arden Cornell Mead and his wife Carol.
Family will receive friends at Smith-Miner funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, Midland, for a Memorial Visitation on Thursday, December 29th from 4-7 p.m.
