James R. Musselman ( October 23, 1937 - February 7, 2018 )

James R. Musselman, 80, of Midland, passed away at home on February 7, 2018 surrounded by family. He was born on October 23, 1937 in Sterling, Michigan to the late Ray and Hazel (Groh) Musselman. On June 23, 1956 he married Marlene Sanders and they had 61 wonderful years together.

James started as a tool and die maker for General Motors. He then went on to be the owner and founder of International Engineering Company (Woody’s) starting in 1968. He retired in 2000 leaving the business in the care of his sons. Which is celebrating 50 years in business. James was a life member of the Midland Elks. He was also a member of the Hope Fire Department and served as chief for part of his tenure. In addition, he was a member of the Gibson Township Fire Department where he served part of his time as chief. James helped to found the Billings Township Fire Department. He was the first President of the Ambulance Board for Midland County and helped to set up Midland County’s 911 system. Additionally, he was president of Meridian School Board and a member of Holy Scripture Lutheran Church.

James was inducted into the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. James and Marlene founded Deer Run Rehabilitation, a stand-alone in-patient facility designed to treat people with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries after his son had a tragic accident.

Jim had a special love for the lake and the water, he enjoyed boating and snowmobiling and many other outdoor activities with his family.

Jim is survived by his wife, Marlene, children; Mark (Ruth) Musselman, Brian Musselman, Robert (Liz Seelhoff) Musselman, Carol (Terry Morse) Musselman, Lori (Randy) Oberson, 10 grandchildren; Craig, Aaron, Michelle, Melanie, Austin, Collin, Carter, Devon, Hunter, Taylor, and 8 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, February 12, 2018 at Holy Scripture Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Schneider officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, February 11th, from 4-7 pm at Smith-Miner Funeral Home and on Monday from 10 am until the time of service. Burial will take place at Hope Township’s new cemetery.
