Merritt R. Meeks ( September 21, 1918 - April 16, 2018 )

Merritt R. Meeks, 99, of Midland, passed away on April 16, 2018 at MidMichigan Medical Center. He was born on September 21, 1918 to the late David and Vera (Nordan) Meeks. Merritt graduated from Albion College with a BS in Chemistry and went to Oberlin College to receive his MS in Chemistry. On August 4, 1945 he married Joyce A. Schonschack and shared 70 wonderful years together before she predeceased him on December 13, 2015.

Merritt serviced his country honorably during WWII in the United States Navy. After the war he went on to work as a chemist for Dow Chemical retiring in February of 1980. Merritt was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church. Through the years he was involved with Midland Camera Club, Midland Nature Center, Historical Society and was a mentor several elementary schools. He enjoyed camping, wood working and traveling.

Merritt is survived by his two daughters; Judith (Robert) Woodland and Marilyn (Jon) Horton; five grandchildren; Joshua Woodland, Benjamin (Angie) Horton, Sarah Woodland (Joseph) Merrill, Seth (Peggy) Horton and Luke (Sara) Horton; eight great grandchildren, Rory, Gavin, and Maeryn Horton, Isaac and Caleb Merrill, Emma and Owen Horton, and Jude Horton.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the summer for Merritt at First United Methodist Church.
Interment will be in the Shrader Memorial Gardens at the Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, Midland, MI or the West Midland Family Center.
