Mary Louise Gauld ( March 25, 1931 - February 17, 2018 )

Mary Louise Gauld, 86, of Midland, Michigan went to meet her Lord on Saturday, February 17, 2018. Mary was born on March 25, 1931, in Flint, MI, to Merwin and Ruby (Doren) Mansfield. The family later settled in Boon, MI and Mary graduated from Mesick High School in 1949. In 1951, she met the love of her life, Verl Vernon Gauld, and they were married on March 21, 1952.
In the early years, Mary worked as a telephone operator for Michigan Bell and Verl began to work for the Sherwin Williams Company, both in Cadillac. Throughout the following 11 years, while residing in Manton, MI, 5 children rounded out the family; Dannelle (Steve) Pickering of Midland, Shaun (Karen) Gauld of Mound, MN, Linda (Tom) Patefield of Rockford, IL, Marcy (Matthew) Staley of Jacksonville, FL and Shelley (Jon) Patz of Pound, WI.
After moving to Midland in 1965, they spent the next several years raising their children and preparing for the next step in their life partnership. In 1973, after depositing Dannelle in her first apartment, the rest of the family hit the road for Wadena, MN, where they ministered as Missionary Pastor and Wife for three years. They made lifelong friends and helped the church grow to become self-sustaining. When the church was ready to hire a full-time Pastor, they moved to their next ministry in Crivitz, WI.
After 8 years at a small church there, again creating many lasting friendships, the couple was led to begin a traveling ministry intended to coming along side struggling pastors of other small churches and help in any way they could. During those years, they lived either in travel trailers or in rented homes. They ministered in various churches and camps throughout Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of MI, but also spent one winter in AZ and three years in Great Falls, MT.
In all those years and throughout all those travels, Mary ministered right alongside Verl, teaching women’s bible lessons, mentoring women, helping in Vacation Bible School and Sunday School classes with children. She also taught for two years at an Accelerated Christian Education elementary school.
Beside her Lord and her family, there were two main things Mary loved; gardening and her varied crafts. She almost always had a garden growing, both vegetables and flowers, and she was seldom without some sort of her crafting efforts nearby. She sewed clothing for her children, Barbie clothes and later American Girl clothes, and she sewed, knitted, crocheted and cross-stitched items to give as gifts or to sell. Another favorite thing of Mary’s was hats. She loved to wear a pretty hat to church or any special occasion.
Mary is survived by her children, 15 grandchildren, 19 ½ great-grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She was a much-loved sister-in-law and aunt to many. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verl, her parents, Merwin and Ruby, and by her brothers, Richard and James Mansfield.
A Celebration of Life and of the Homegoing of Mary will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, Perrine and Wackerly Roads on Saturday, May 5th, 2018, led by Pastor Mike Reece. Visitation is at 10 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m. with a luncheon following at the church. Interment will happen at a later date in Pound, WI.
An expression of sympathy may be directed to Mary’s family in her honor.
