Bernard Van Wert ( March 26, 1935 - August 30, 2018 )

Bernard Van Wert, 83, of Midland, passed away on August 30, 2018 at Stratford Village. He was born on March 26, 1935 to the late Bernard J. and Evelyn (Neering) Van Wert. On May 5, 1962 he married Patricia Collier at St. Michael’s in Pinconning.

Bernard attended Michigan State University where he played one season of basketball. He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. Bernard worked as an electrical engineer for Dow Corning Corporation retiring in 1996. He held many patents during his tenure at Dow Corning. Bernard enjoyed cards, games, taking care of his yard, watching sports on TV and was an avid reader. Bernard loved his family and for him they were the most important part of his life.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Patricia, children, Celeste (Jason Grunder) VanWert, Tim VanWert, Chris (Wendy Fong) VanWert, grandchildren, Katie Grunder, Rachel Grunder, Max VanWert and Remy VanWert. He is also survived by siblings, Bernice Zuchnik, Donna Kruchowski, and Sharon Skrabut.

Bernard was predeceased by his sisters and brother, Victoria Salois, Evelyn Gies and Don VanWert.

A Memorial Liturgy will be held at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 11:00 am with Fr. Joe Griffin and Deacon Larry Fussman officiating. Friends may visit with the family at Smith-Miner Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 4th from 4-7 pm with a vigil service starting at 6:30 pm and on Wednesday at the church from 10 am until the time of service.
