Alfred P. Steinke ( January 13, 1927 - October 18, 2016 )



Alfred Paul Steinke passed away October 18, 2016 at Candlestone in Midland surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 13, 1927 to Henry and Bertha (Fenske) Steinke in Detroit, Michigan. He attended schools in Dearborn, MI.
AI served in the United States Army in World War II from February, 1945 until December, 1946. He was in the 77th Airborne Division serving in Japan and Philippines. After his time in service, he worked in the Ford and Chrysler auto plants in Detroit.

He moved to Midland in September, 1951 and worked for Dow Chemical Company in the Fire Department where he was a fireman and ambulance driver for 30 years, retiring in 1982. He and his wife Bonnie spent 26 years wintering in Orlando, FL after his retirement.

He married the love of his life, Bonnie King, of Sanford, MI on July 11, 1952 at Hope Baptist Church by Rev Duane Lindsay. He was a faithful member of Hope Baptist Church where he helped in many areas, especially to help construct the church building.

AI is survived by his loving wife Bonnie of 64 wonderful years, and two daughters, Julie (Robin) Ouderkirk and Peggy (Fred) Spiker. He is also survived by his six grandchildren and their spouses, Brent (Jennifer) Ouderkirk, Lance (Heather) Ouderkirk, Travis Ouderkirk and Tyler Ouderkirk; Keri (Dan) Gisslen and Stephanie (Mark) Hauman; and eight great grandchildren, Alyssa and Brandon Ouderkirk; Abigail and Dyllon Ouderkirk; Robbie and Kayleigh Hauman; and Emily and Benjamin Gisslen.

He was predeceased by his parents, one brother Dan, sisters Anna and Dorothy, half-brother Marvin, and two step brothers Pete and Mike.

Funeral service will take place at 11:00 am on Monday, October 24, 2016 at Hope Baptist Church with Pastor Neil Wiggins and Dr. Sheldon Schearer officiating. Visitation will be held at 10:00 am at the church preceding the funeral service at 11:00 am. Interment will be at the Sanford Cemetery following the service. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Military honors will be under the auspices of the United States Army and Midland County Veterans.
