Joan M. Glackin ( June 8, 1932 - October 17, 2016 )

Joan M. Glackin, 84, of Midland, formerly of Denison, Iowa, passed away at MidMichigan Medical Center on Monday, October 17, 2016. She was born to the late Lloyd and Edith (Thompson) Gates on June 8, 1932. She married Harold A. Glackin on October 27, 1956 at Sacred Heart Church in Spencer, Iowa. They were married until Harold's death on April 13, 2004. Joan and Harold lived in Spencer, IA until 1969 when they moved to Denison.

Joan was a music teacher and choir director at St. Rose of Lima School in Denison. She loved music and loved singing. She and her sisters Arlene Gates, Joyce Loud and LaVonne Biekert sang professionally in their sister’s quartet (The Gates Sisters) in and around southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa. They had a radio show on Worthington’s radio station, had a TV show on KELO, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and appeared on WCCO in Minneapolis. They performed at weddings, church gatherings school functions, etc. She and her sisters were also members of the local Sweet Adeline's under the name the Swinging Gates Sisters. Joan also enjoyed following national politics.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Kimala (Reynold) Peterson of Spencer, Iowa, son, Michael (Jennifer) Glackin of Midland, Michigan, grandchildren, Courtney Peterson, Caitlyn (Kyle) Kacmarynski, Grace, Alexander & James Glackin, and one great granddaughter Chloe Sue Kacmarynski.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, mother, and her sisters, Arlene, Bonnie and Joyce who was also Joan’s twin.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
